In 2007, Sheriff Brian Hounshell pleaded guilty to Solicitation for Misuse of Public Monies, a Class 6 undesignated felony. He was indicted in 2005 on charges including misuse of public funds, fraud, and theft. As part of his plea agreement, Hounshell resigned effective September 30, 2007, agreed not to seek public office in the future, and faced probation with potential jail time. Despite this, in 2010, Hounshell was rehired by Apache County as the Emergency Management and Preparedness Director.
