In July 2018, while serving as an officer in Desert Hot Springs, California, Huerta was involved in a controversial incident where he confronted a suspect, repeatedly telling him ‘you haven’t seen harassment yet’ and to ‘stop mad-dogging me.’ This led to an internal investigation, and Huerta was released from probationary employment in July 2018. He later joined the Wrangell Police Department in June 2019 but resigned in June 2020. Additionally, Huerta was named as a defendant in a civil rights lawsuit filed on January 20, 2019, which was settled out of court on March 11, 2019.
