In March 2021, Officer Vidal Contreras shot Seth Greenstone, who was holding a box cutter and appeared to be attempting self-harm. Contreras’ body camera footage showed that he fired at Greenstone after twice commanding him to drop the knife. Greenstone was shot in the head and suffered severe injuries, rendering him unable to speak or comprehend. Greenstone’s mother filed a lawsuit against the department and Contreras, alleging excessive force and failure to properly train officers.
