Over his 25-year career, Sergeant John Brown faced multiple accusations of violence against women. In October 2017, he was arrested for allegedly shoving his ex-girlfriend to the ground during an argument. Although prosecutors did not pursue the charge due to conflicting accounts, an internal investigation noted this was the third such accusation against Brown. He was demoted to officer but challenged the decision. In June 2018, Brown and the city reached an agreement allowing him to retire immediately in good standing, regaining his sergeant rank, and receiving a monthly pension and payouts for unused leave.
