Anthony Briscoe Mason – Aiken Department of Public Safety

On January 3, 2023, Officer Anthony Briscoe Mason responded to a traffic accident at the intersection of Two Notch and East Pine Log roads. During the incident, Mason detected the odor of marijuana from a vehicle and attempted to search it. The driver, Mr. Akia Jordan, refused the search and attempted to walk away. Mason grabbed Jordan’s arm, leading to a foot chase. After apprehending Jordan, Mason struck him on the head while Jordan resisted handcuffing. Jordan complained of dizziness and was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers before being booked. Following an internal investigation, Mason was terminated on January 9, 2023, for violating the department’s use of force policy. On December 27, 2023, Mason was arrested and charged with third-degree assault and battery in connection with the incident.
