In 2021, Deputy Brandon Hartley, an academy instructor, was accused of sexually assaulting a female cadet multiple times. The assaults allegedly occurred in private settings, including a closet at the sheriff’s office. Hartley resigned during an internal investigation into similar allegations from a previous year. The cadet filed a lawsuit against Hartley and the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, claiming the department failed to support her and allowed the abuse to continue. The lawsuit is ongoing.
