Brock Mrdjenovich – Ashland County Sheriff’s Office

Deputy Brock Mrdjenovich fatally shot 14-year-old Jason Pero on November 8, 2017, on the Bad River Indian Reservation. Mrdjenovich responded to a report of a male walking with a knife and shot Pero twice in the chest. A special prosecutor determined the shooting was justified, and no charges were filed. However, the incident led to a $9.5 million wrongful death claim from Pero’s family, alleging excessive force and lack of proper training. The Ashland County Board rejected the claim in March 2018.
