In February 2019, Deputy Cameron Duecker unlawfully entered Sheila Webb’s home without probable cause and repeatedly tased her while she attempted to hide under a blanket. Webb had called 911 to report a family dispute, but the situation escalated when Duecker arrested her for resisting arrest and breach of peace. Following an internal investigation, Duecker was fired and charged with third-degree assault. In January 2023, a federal jury found the Richland County Sheriff’s Department liable for Duecker’s actions, awarding Webb $500,000 in damages, and held Duecker personally liable for excessive force and unlawful seizure, ordering him to pay $50,000. Duecker is no longer permitted to work in law enforcement in South Carolina.
