Captain Dan Soumas – Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office

In 2017, Captain Dan Soumas was terminated from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office after raising concerns about the alleged misuse of forfeiture funds. Soumas claimed that the department planned to use $30,000 of seized drug money to hire an individual at the Child Advocacy Center, which he believed violated federal asset forfeiture rules. After reporting his concerns, Soumas alleged he was warned to ‘get on board or he would be gone from the KCSO.’ He was fired less than four months later and subsequently filed a wrongful termination lawsuit seeking unspecified damages.
