On January 7, 2019, Officer Christofer Kitto was involved in an off-duty fatal shooting of an armed assailant while allegedly meeting a prostitute he had solicited online. Kitto was cleared of wrongdoing in the shooting but was criminally charged with patronizing a person for prostitution in the third degree. In April 2019, the Albany Police Department filed disciplinary charges against him. Kitto resigned on May 13, 2019, after accepting a plea deal that included his resignation and a guilty plea to driving while ability impaired.
