In September 2020, Sgt. Mecca tased a fully restrained inmate, Travis Cole, who was strapped into a restraint chair with his limbs immobilized and a ‘spit sock’ over his head. This use of force was against department policy and deemed unnecessary and excessive. Mecca was placed on leave, terminated, and later convicted of third-degree assault and official misconduct, receiving a sentence of 60 hours in jail and two years of community service. A lawsuit filed by Cole alleges that Mecca admitted to using the Taser because Cole is Black, stating that had Cole been white, he would not have tased him.
