In April 2020, Police Chief Dale Engle was placed on administrative leave following allegations that he made derogatory comments regarding the death of Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Shannon Bennett, who died from COVID-19. Engle allegedly claimed that Bennett’s death was due to his ‘homosexual lifestyle.’ After an investigation, Engle announced his retirement in July 2020.
