On June 5, 2018, Officer Kurtz participated in the arrest of juvenile N.B. After N.B. surrendered by lying on the ground with his hands visible, Kurtz aimed his firearm and flashlight at N.B. Officer Winkle then kicked N.B. in the head and struck him multiple times. Kurtz failed to report Winkle’s use of excessive force. He pleaded guilty to misprision of felony for concealing and failing to report the incident and was sentenced to 6 months in prison.
