David Johnston – Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office

In July 2014, Deputy David Johnston was placed on administrative leave after an incident involving Deputy Kelly Munter, his ex-girlfriend, during a call at Monforton School. Munter filed a complaint against Johnston, leading to his suspension. Johnston was ordered to return a tape recorder containing the interaction but initially refused, seeking legal advice and making a copy before complying. He was subsequently fired in July 2014 for insubordination. Johnston sued for wrongful termination, and in 2015, a judge reinstated him and awarded over $125,000 in lost wages and benefits. The county appealed, and Johnston filed additional claims. In 2016, Gallatin County settled all suits by paying Johnston $400,000, with the agreement that he would not seek reinstatement with the sheriff’s office.

  • View the Blog: Read about documented police interactions
  • Share Your Experience: Submit your own police interaction story
  • Browse the Forums: Check if your local law enforcement has been documented

Important Community Guidelines

It is strictly against our rules to:

  • Make threats of any kind
  • Share private information such as personal emails, home addresses, or phone numbers

Violation of these rules will result in immediate content removal and possible account suspension.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
