David Rivera – New Canaan Police Department

In April 2022, Officer David Rivera was arrested for illegally possessing explosives and an assault weapon. He used his New Canaan police badge to purchase and improperly store explosives, which is prohibited. In July 2024, Rivera was sentenced to two years in prison followed by three years of probation for first-degree malicious wounding/killing of an animal, after ordering the fatal shootings of more than a dozen dogs and puppies at his business, Black Rock Canines of Naugatuck. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of explosives and illegal purchase/receipt of a long gun. Rivera was suspended from the police department following his arrest and subsequently resigned. In October 2024, the New Canaan Pension Committee unanimously denied his disability pension application, citing his act of dishonesty by using his badge to purchase explosives.
