Department-wide – Essex County Sheriff’s Office

In June 2024, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Vermont filed a lawsuit against the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, alleging violations of the Vermont Public Records Act. The ACLU claimed that the department failed to provide requested documents concerning communications with federal immigration officials, which were pertinent to the department’s compliance with Vermont’s Fair and Impartial Policing Policy. The department had invited the ACLU to view the records in person and participate in a ride-along, a request the ACLU declined, arguing that mandating in-person review was against the law and unfair. The case was ongoing as of June 2024.
