In April 2021, Deputy Ellis participated in the restraint of Stephen Michael Wittkamper, who was tased and held face down, resulting in his death. The incident led to a lawsuit alleging excessive force and wrongful death, with the court denying a motion to dismiss in February 2024, allowing the case to proceed.
