Deputy Jerry McKinney, a 20-year veteran of the RPSO, suffered a stroke in late 2017. Upon returning to work, he was unable to pass firearm recertification and was reassigned to a 12-hour shift at the jail. Due to health issues, his doctor recommended an 8-hour shift. Although initially accommodated, higher-ups reversed the decision, and McKinney was ordered back to a 12-hour shift. When he requested any available 8-hour position, he was terminated five days before Christmas. McKinney filed a lawsuit alleging violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act. The RPSO settled the case for $187,500 after McKinney’s death during the lawsuit proceedings.
