Deputy Joseph Richardson – Utah County Sheriff’s Office

In March 2021, Deputy Joseph Richardson was involved in a fatal car crash that resulted in the death of BYU student Joseph Spencer. Richardson, responding to an incident in his private vehicle, was traveling at 56.5 mph in a 35 mph zone when he collided with Spencer’s car. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Richardson, the sheriff’s office, Utah County, and Taco Bell. Richardson was charged with manslaughter and placed on leave pending investigation.
