In April 2017, Deputy Marc Riley observed inmate Christopher Helphenstine vomiting in his cell. Helphenstine informed Riley he was ‘dope sick’ and requested to be placed in isolation to recover. Riley moved him to an isolation cell and completed an incident report. This was Riley’s only interaction with Helphenstine. Helphenstine later died in custody. A lawsuit alleged deliberate indifference to Helphenstine’s medical needs, but the court found Riley’s actions did not demonstrate knowledge of an unjustifiably high risk of harm.
