Deputy Marsha Skidgel was one of the deputies on duty during the April 2017 death of inmate James Wippel from a perforated ulcer in the Jefferson County Jail. Skidgel, along with two other deputies, was charged with criminally negligent homicide in April 2018. In December 2018, all three deputies were acquitted. Following the acquittal, Skidgel filed a civil lawsuit in July 2019 against the prosecutors, alleging malicious prosecution and seeking $10 million in damages.
