Written by In February 2023, a Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputy was involved in an incident where detainee Travis Craig was slammed into a wall and the floor during booking. Craig, who was handcuffed, spat blood and saliva into the deputy’s face, claiming he had hepatitis C. The use of force resulted in Craig suffering an orbital fracture and concussion. The incident was reviewed and found to be within the county’s use of force policies, and the District Attorney’s office declined to prosecute. Craig has since filed a lawsuit against the county, alleging excessive force.
