A deputy, whose name has been redacted, was terminated from the Portales Police Department after an internal affairs investigation in November 2020 revealed behaviors indicative of a child predator. Despite these findings, the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Board dismissed the misconduct allegations in April 2021. Subsequently, the deputy was hired by the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office in November 2021. Sheriff Mark Cage acknowledged the internal affairs report raised red flags but noted the officer was never charged nor found guilty by the NMLEA. The deputy is restricted from serving as a school resource officer or interviewing children alone.
