Deputy Sheriff Greg Leatherberry – Langlade County Sheriff’s Office

In 2001, Deputy Sheriff Greg Leatherberry was involved in an incident where he used force to remove the clothing of an inmate, Connie Anne Shaw, who had expressed suicidal thoughts during booking. Shaw alleged that Leatherberry threw her against a cement block bunk, causing her to hit a wall and fall face-first, placed his knee on her neck, and forcibly removed her clothing while she was handcuffed. Leatherberry testified that he used necessary force due to Shaw’s resistance. The case was reviewed by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which upheld the lower court’s decision in favor of Leatherberry, concluding that the force used was not excessive under the circumstances. No disciplinary action was taken against Leatherberry as a result of this incident.
