In April 2021, Deputy Steply participated in the incident where Stephen Michael Wittkamper was tased and restrained face down, resulting in his death. A lawsuit alleging excessive force and wrongful death was filed, with the court denying a motion to dismiss in February 2024, allowing the case to proceed.
