Deputy Tim Gillespie – Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office

In May 2015, Deputy Tim Gillespie initiated a felony traffic stop on Highway 281 south of Jamestown, mistakenly detaining two individuals based on incorrect information about stolen equipment. The individuals were handcuffed at gunpoint and released after officers realized the error. Following the incident, Sheriff Chad Kaiser revoked Gillespie’s deputy status, citing embarrassment to the department and a lack of understanding of basic law enforcement protocol. Gillespie contested the decision, arguing that multiple officers were involved and that he was unfairly singled out. A grievance committee later recommended reinstating his peace officer license and removing the reprimand from his record, noting procedural errors in the reprimand process.
