Derek Farr – Roanoke Police Department

In 2020, Lieutenant Derek Farr posted an allegedly racist message on his personal Facebook account, leading to community controversy. The incident contributed to the election of a new mayor, Jill Patterson Hicks, who was friends with Farr. The former police chief, Adam Melton, recommended disciplinary action against Farr for the post. However, Patterson Hicks was unaware of the internal complaints and disciplinary actions related to Farr’s post until a lawsuit was filed. The case, Melton v. City of Roanoke, was dismissed in January 2024, with the court granting summary judgment in favor of the city.
