In 2022, Detective Captain Thobaben instructed a deputy to conduct a vehicle search without a warrant, leading to a Brady violation. She subsequently altered the deputy’s report to conceal this directive, which was not disclosed to the District Attorney’s Office. This action resulted in a special prosecutor being appointed to review the case for possible criminal charges.
