Between July and October 2023, the Greenwood Police Department conducted an internal investigation into five officers who used department-issued computers to send messages containing racial slurs, sexually explicit language, and derogatory comments about protected classes. This led to four resignations and one termination. An independent study was commissioned to assess potential bias in traffic stops by these officers. The study found that the five officers stopped Black drivers for speeding at a statistically significant higher rate than white drivers. However, after their removal, no evidence suggested the department treated any racial or ethnic group in a discriminatory manner. The department has since implemented measures to prevent such misconduct and ensure accountability.
