Disciplinary Actions Overview – Sacramento Police Department

Between 2019 and 2023, the city of Sacramento spent over $22 million settling lawsuits involving claims of police misconduct. These cases included five deaths and 12 individuals who were seriously injured. The types of violations ranged from excessive use of force to unlawful detentions, with settlements varying from less than $100,000 to multi-million dollar agreements. Typical punishments for officers involved in these incidents have included additional training and reassignment, though some cases resulted in termination. The department has faced criticism for delays in releasing disciplinary records and for not consistently imposing timely disciplinary actions.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
