Over the past decade, the Savannah Police Department has faced multiple incidents of officer misconduct, including use-of-force violations, perjury, and false statements. Notably, between January and June 2022, there were six officer-involved shootings in Chatham County, five within Savannah’s jurisdiction, resulting in five civilian deaths. The department has also faced lawsuits alleging wrongful deaths and civil rights violations. In response to these issues, the city has implemented reforms, such as altering the Civil Service Board’s authority to an advisory role in disciplinary matters, aiming to enhance accountability and oversight within the department.
