Disciplinary Actions Overview – Westbrook Police Department

Over the past decade, the Westbrook Police Department has faced several lawsuits and allegations of misconduct. Notably, a gender discrimination lawsuit in 2015 resulted in a $100,000 settlement. In 2021, the city settled a lawsuit alleging racial bias for $40,000. Data from 2019 indicated that Black individuals, comprising 5% of the city’s population, were involved in 22% of use-of-force incidents. The department has since implemented training programs on implicit bias to address these issues.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
