Create And Track Police Department History
In April 2022, Officer Steven Sanchez was involved in the death of Herman Whitfield III, a Black man experiencing a mental health crisis. Sanchez, along with Officer Adam Ahmad, restrained Whitfield face down for an extended period, leading to Whitfield’s death. Both officers were indicted on charges including involuntary manslaughter and reckless homicide. In December 2024, they were acquitted of all charges. Whitfield’s family has filed a civil lawsuit against the city and the officers, set for trial in July 2025.
