In October 2010, Officer Chris Daugherty was accused of sexually assaulting a female detainee in the City of Sumiton Jail. The detainee alleged that Daugherty threatened her, made verbal sexual threats, and forced her to perform unwanted sexual acts. A lawsuit was filed against Daugherty and the City of Sumiton, asserting violations of the Fourth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments, as well as state law claims for invasion of privacy, assault and battery, outrage, and negligent retention, training, and supervision. The case was documented in Smith v. Sumiton, City of et al.
