Former Chief of Police Dewayne Tennie was sued in December 2018 by a female officer for sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, retaliation, slander, defamation per se, and assault and battery. The lawsuit alleges that Tennie, who became chief in 2014, forced the officer to have sexual relations with him on numerous occasions from 2014 to 2018, including instances of rape. The officer claims that Tennie threatened her and made her job difficult when she refused his advances. Tennie was placed on paid administrative leave in March 2018 and resigned later that month. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigated the allegations, and the case against Tennie remains open.

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
