On June 30, 2024, at approximately 2:30 AM, a Hartselle police officer initiated a traffic stop on Highway 31 near the intersection of Highway 36 after observing a vehicle exceeding the speed limit. The driver, an off-duty Decatur police officer, admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that night. Instead of arresting the driver for DUI, the Hartselle officer arranged to give them a ride to a nearby residence. An internal review determined that the officer did not act in accordance with the department’s policies and standards and was disciplined accordingly. The officer’s name has not been publicly disclosed.
