In March 2020, Officer Aaron Russell fired five shots at Michael Delaney’s vehicle after Delaney ignored commands to exit and attempted to drive away. Delaney was shot in the shoulder and later pleaded guilty to obstructing an officer. Russell was indicted by a multi-county grand jury and pleaded no contest to reckless handling of a firearm, receiving a deferred sentence. Delaney filed a lawsuit in 2021 alleging constitutional rights violations, which is proceeding to trial to examine potential systemic training failures within the department.
