Former officer Adam Coy was convicted of murder for the 2020 shooting of Andre Hill, an unarmed Black man holding a cellphone. Coy mistook the cellphone for a gun and shot Hill four times. He was also convicted of reckless homicide and felonious assault. Coy had a history of 90 complaints since 2002, including multiple use-of-force allegations. Following the incident, Columbus implemented ‘Andre’s Law,’ mandating immediate medical attention for injured suspects, and reached a $10 million settlement with Hill’s family.
