In August 2018, Amy Le was the watch commander during an incident where inmate Andrew Hogan suffered a catastrophic head injury while being transported. Hogan was left unattended and unconscious for a period of time. Following the incident, Le was promoted to captain in December 2018. The county settled with Hogan for over $10 million. The promotion raised questions about possible political influence, as Le was president of the Santa Clara County Correctional Peace Officers Association, which supported Sheriff Laurie Smith’s reelection.
