In March 2020, Officer Andrew Leonard assaulted an unarmed prisoner, Gian Mattiello, in a secure area of the Cranston Police Department headquarters. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras. Leonard was found guilty of simple assault in May 2021 and sentenced to one year of probation. He appealed the verdict but later withdrew the appeal in September 2022, accepting the original sentence.
