In 2015, Assistant Principal Anthony Moss was involved in an incident where he tripped a student attempting to leave Carver High School and stepped on her back to restrain her. The student was later pepper-sprayed by a school police officer. This led to a federal lawsuit filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center against the Birmingham Police Department for excessive force against students.
