In 2011, City Councillor Griffin participated in the unlawful seizure and excessive use of force against Alfred F. Schultz. Griffin arrived at the scene with a shotgun, trained it on the handcuffed Schultz, and struck him with the butt of the shotgun, causing physical injury. The court determined that Griffin’s actions constituted excessive force in violation of the Fourth Amendment. The case proceeded with claims against Griffin for excessive force and unlawful seizure.
