In February 2020, Deputy Jailer Austin Philpot was involved in an incident where inmate Gary W. Paul alleged he was physically assaulted, maced, and denied medical attention. Paul filed a lawsuit claiming Philpot and other staff used excessive force without provocation. Philpot was terminated on March 24, 2020, for violating policies against unnecessary force and bringing contraband into the jail. He was rehired on May 29, 2020.
