On June 3, 2019, Officer Waguespack responded to a call regarding a possibly suicidal man with a gun. Upon arrival, he encountered 59-year-old David Hoal in his backyard. After repeated demands for Hoal to drop the weapon, Waguespack fired his weapon, striking and killing Hoal. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Hoal’s widow, alleging excessive force and civil rights violations. The case was under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Shelby County District Attorney’s office as of July 2020.
