On September 7, 2024, an incident involving Brunswick Police Officer Robert Bryce Sasser and 13-year-old Colt Gordon garnered significant attention due to allegations of excessive force. The encounter, captured on both body camera and doorbell camera footage, shows Officer Sasser confronting Colt for riding his bicycle on the sidewalk, a traffic violation. The situation escalated when Sasser physically took Colt to the ground and later pointed a taser at him.

Following the incident, Colt was charged with two traffic violations and obstruction; however, these charges were subsequently dismissed. Colt’s parents filed formal complaints with the Brunswick Police Department (BPD) on September 16, 2024. Despite scheduling meetings to discuss the matter, these did not occur, leading to criticism over the department’s handling of the situation.

In December 2024, new video evidence prompted the BPD to request an independent review by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Brunswick Police Chief Kevin Jones stated that the department sought an external assessment to determine if Officer Sasser’s actions were within the scope of the law.

Notably, Officer Sasser had been previously terminated from the BPD in 2018 following a misdemeanor charge of reckless conduct related to a murder-suicide involving his father, Glynn County Police Lieutenant Robert “Cory” Sasser. Questions have arisen regarding his rehiring and continued employment with the department.

The internal investigation into the September 2024 incident is ongoing. The BPD has acknowledged shortcomings in communication with the complainants and has committed to policy changes to ensure officers properly identify themselves during non-emergency situations.

The incident has sparked community discussions about police conduct and accountability. As the investigation continues, the public awaits further developments and potential policy reforms within the Brunswick Police Department.
