Sheriff B.J. Roberts was sued in 2011 by six former employees alleging First Amendment violations after they were not reappointed following his re-election. The plaintiffs claimed they were dismissed for supporting Roberts’ opponent. The court granted summary judgment in favor of Roberts in April 2012, concluding that the plaintiffs’ rights were not clearly established.
