Former Lieutenant Benjamin Shoemaker pleaded guilty to three federal counts of deprivation of civil rights under color of law. Shoemaker admitted to intentionally maintaining filthy and deadly conditions in the jail to manipulate county commissioners into increasing salaries and the jail budget. This scheme led to the death of Tony Mitchell from sepsis and hypothermia in January 2023. Shoemaker also admitted to assaulting other inmates and was promoted for such behavior.
