In May 2020, during downtown protests, Officer Ballinger tackled Lucas Williams, causing a concussion and broken nose. Williams was arrested on multiple misdemeanor charges, which were later dropped. In 2021, Ballinger was convicted of strangulation and domestic battery, resulting in his resignation from the department. A federal jury awarded Williams $80,000 in damages for excessive force and wrongful arrest.
