In May 2020, during the George Floyd protests in Fort Wayne, then-Sgt. Boyce Ballinger tackled Lucas Williams, a 19-year-old bystander, causing injuries including a concussion and broken nose. A federal jury in July 2024 found Ballinger used excessive force and falsely arrested Williams, awarding $80,000 in damages. Ballinger resigned from the FWPD in March 2021 following a domestic battery conviction.
