Former lieutenant Bradley C. Totten was convicted in November 2013 of felony sexual abuse by a parent, custodian, or guardian. He pled guilty to sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl, with the abuse beginning when she was 15. Totten was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison and fined $5,000. His actions severely damaged public trust in law enforcement within the community.

Roberts alleged that Totten coerced her into sexual intercourse on two occasions in 2010 while on duty and continued to harass her after she began working in the Prosecuting Attorney’s office in 2011. The lawsuit was settled in October 2014 for $75,000.

In November 2012, Teressa Schoolcraft filed a civil rights lawsuit against former Deputy Sheriff Bradley C. Totten, alleging that he coerced her into becoming a confidential informant and later raped her in May 2010. The lawsuit also named the Pocahontas County Commission and Sheriff David Jonese, alleging violations of the state Human Rights Act and negligent supervision. The case was put on hold pending the outcome of related criminal charges against Totten.
